This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a test for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional body horror, but within Together exists a deep examination about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He fears the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple face the kind of problems that come with long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
