Resurgent Medvedev Wins Maiden Championship in 882 Days
Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's 21 victories have been earned on hard surfaces
A resurgent Daniil Medvedev secured his first title for over two years with success over opponent Moutet in the competition final.
The Russian, a ex- number one, has endured a torrid season, managing just a single victory at the major tournaments and experiencing a meltdown at the US Open.
His varied form on the professional circuit - and struggles with his serving in specific - led to him dropping out of the world's top 10 and ultimately parting ways with long-time coach Gilles Cervara.
Now collaborating with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, he has consistently improved in the past month - climaxing in a hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over challenger Moutet.
This marks the player's maiden title following the Italian tournament and initial on a hard surface since spring of 2023.
Victory also indicates the Russian has secured 21 victories at 21 distinct events.
"This marks the first occasion I have attended a tournament with my children at once, so to win a trophy is particularly special," stated world number 14 Medvedev.
"This victory is in tribute of my child Victoria, because the first title I won when my first daughter Alisa was born was for her."
The athlete, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his last six finals, including in the German tournament in the past months.
Medvedev's retrieving strategy and recurring reactions on court had prompted observers to question if his ability to play at the highest level was finished.
But the athlete has altered his approach in the past month, attempting to approach the net and compete assertively, supported by an better serving game.
The champion recovered from a break down in the initial set against the difficult opponent, winning four of the final five games to take the lead.
The competitors traded break points in the middle set before the challenger, bidding for his maiden professional victory, gained dominance to force a third set.
Moutet rescued 4 initial break points in a competitive deciding set before Medvedev broke to fifteen to serve for the match.
Fittingly, the winner clinched the win with a point at the front of the court, with his opponent failing to handle a return after over two and a half hours.
