The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the arrest, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

He was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, Brasília.

The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
