A French judicial body has found guilty ten people for carrying out the online harassment of Brigitte Macron, the wife of French President, Emmanuel Macron.
The accused individuals faced accusations of spreading untruths regarding her gender identity and sexuality, in addition to publishing hurtful comments about the couple's 24-year age gap.
The court handed down suspended prison sentences of a maximum of eight months to the defendants. The complete verdict has yet to be released.
A circulating conspiracy theory alleging that Brigitte Macron is a trans woman has existed since her husband's rise to the presidency in 2017.
This latest legal outcome in France is concurrent with the Macrons pursuing a libel case in the US against right-wing influencer Candace Owens, who has repeatedly shared comparable unfounded claims about the French president's wife's gender.
Their legal filing contends that Owens ignored substantial counter-evidence disproving her claim choosing instead to amplify the voices of notorious conspiracy peddlers.
Owens has regularly repeated these claims on her podcast and social media channels, and in March 2024 declared that she would risk all her credibility on her insistence that Mrs. Macron was born a man.
Brigitte Macron originally became acquainted with her current spouse when she worked as an educator at his secondary school.
The two entered into matrimony in 2007, when the then-29-year-old Emmanuel Macron was 29 and she was 54.
